The landscapes of the Southwest give those who walk through them a special means of finding peace. The mountains, deserts and rivers of this area allow us to feel both infinitely vast and incredibly tiny at the same time. The stillness felt sitting on a red rock cliff overlooking a winding river valley is the same stillness that exists within each and every human – behind the noise and chaos of our daily lives. With this project, Durango artist Sarah Sumner hopes to bring the essence of these places, of that still feeling, into the viewer’s being.
Sumner says of her project:
“In the spring of 2017, I set the intention to begin a year-long art project starting January 1, 2018, in order to give the longing to paint its full expression. I call it Wild Grace Art 365. It quickly became bigger than the need to create art. It became a way to express a deep, important relationship to the Southwest. I took on this project to hold in reverence the land that surrounds us, to give gratitude to its majesty. I set out to honor the colors, light, and life of the sacred places where so many of us feel our best selves.”
