Narrative Threads at DAC

September 2019

This is the final installment of a multi-venue exhibition curated by Abecedarian Artists’ Books Director Alicia Bailey.

Narrative Threads is an exhibition featuring a range of works created by six contemporary artists working in the southwestern United States who use thread in combination with other materials to create narrative in their works.

The works on display include a wide array of structures including wall hangings, sculptural works, dimensionally variable installations and artists’ book works. Regardless of physical scale or structure, the selections invite the reader/viewer in for a tactile, hands-on experience that is engagingly intimate.

Each work selected for Narrative Threads presents a narrative, yet the story line may take a backseat to the tactile invitations extended by color, texture and physical loveliness. The works exhibit a high level of hand-mindedness and interactivity and, even those not meant to be handled, tempt the viewer to touch their surfaces, enlivened as they are by sewn or placed line and texturally dynamic fibers.

Included in the exhibition are works by:

Alicia Bailey – Aurora, Colorado

Candace Hicks – Nagasdoches, Texas

Helen Hiebert – Edwards, Colorado

Jill Powers – Boulder, Colorado

Jim Johnson – Denver, Colorado

Mary Ellen Long – Durango, Colorado
