THE INAUGURAL FESTIVAL DE LOS MUERTOS

November 1 – 9, 2018

Durango Arts Center is launching a dynamic annual Festival de los Muertos; recognizing and affirming the artistic and cultural celebration surrounding the beloved Latin American holiday, Día de los Muertos, (the Day of the Dead).  With Durango’s significant and vibrant Hispanic population, DAC strives to promote multiculturalism and embrace respectful, fun and educational cultural pathways through several creative events for people of all ages and backgrounds to participate.

NOVEMBER 1

FESTIVAL de los Muertos: An Arts Festival Celebrating Day of the Dead!

$5 general admission, 17 and under Free.

  • From 5-8 during the opening Night of Barbara Conrad Gallery, which will be filled with community built Day of the Dead Altars the Durango Arts Center will be filled with celebration for the Day of the Dead. Activities include:
    • Day of the Dead themed Artists’ Booths
    • An evening of performances in the theater:
      • “Entre El Cielo Y La Tiera”, Premiere of US/Mexico Collaborative Dance created by Sur Oeste Arte Escenico of Mexico City in partnership with La Plata Family Centers Coalition and local children and parents.
      • Ballet Folklorico de Durango 
      • “Musical Mandala: Images from Mexico and the Day of the Dead, a Celebration of Our Ancestors”  By:Deva Baumcach, Alejandro Albores, Wendolyne Omaña, Jacobo Guerrero Elias
      • Headline Band: A Lifetime to Overcome! 
  • There will be Food, Drink, & a Cash Bar!
  • Activities for children and families: La Loteria and Paper Flower Making, and Face Painting.

2018 DAC Festival De Los Muertos Events

POZOLE PARADE – OCT 19

At its heart- DAC champions the mixture of art, art making and artists in our community. Soup is often used as a metaphor related to community. The mindful mixture of ingredients enhances the overall dish’s taste; exceeding the benefit of any one particular food source or nutrient. The act of combining flavors promotes connection and leads to transformation within a single pot.  Likewise, celebrating the diversity of unique cultures of those who live and work among us can lead to a transcendence of differences. On October 19, 2018 (6:00PM- 8:30PM) we plan to celebrate the rich diversity of our extended community and their artistic tastes and talents with a recipe for fundraising success- Pozole!  DAC will offer a variety of time and taste tested Pozole (soup derived from the Mexican heritage and tradition) for attendees to enjoy; created by local restaurants. Winning recipes will be celebrated.  An event entrance fee will entitle guests to a hand-crafted bowl and all the pozole they care to try.  The bowls have been created by community members at free workshops from April-July. Proceeds from this fundraiser will support the launch of DAC’s annual event in our primary gallery: The Festival De Los Muertos.  Join the Parade!

Note: Audience will stand and follow performers around the space for the duration of the 50 minute show (wear comfortable shoes).

DAC is pleased to present an internationally recognized Mexican dance/theater performance group to the stage on the second night of Festival de los Muertos, Sur Oeste Arte Escenico.  Sur Oeste will perform, “11:11”, a show was premiered in September 2017 in Cuba and it explores the cycle of life and death and the search for meaning in both. It was inspired by Jane Alexander’s “African Adventure”, an installation at the Tate Modern Art Museum in London. “11:11” is a multidisciplinary dance performance that reflects the anguish and impotence of the mexican social, political, and economic environment. Where nothing happens. Where every year is the same. Every day is the same. Every hour and minute is the same. All repeated as an infinite cycle. What is needed to determine if we are are animals or human beings, hunters or prey, victim or victimizer. Where do we find the beauty in monotony and passivity?

After the opening reception of the Festival de los Muertos at DAC (Nov 1st, from 4 PM-10PM), continue the celebration into the evening at Cantera – 1150 Main Ave.
