The Friends of the Art Library are pleased to present Here, Still a solo exhibit of artwork by visiting artist, Pat Hickman.
Hickman is a prominent conceptual fiber artist who creates unique forms in her signature material of animal gut and hog casings. She thoughtfully offers titles, clues to her silent communication; titles suggest metaphors; metaphors reveal stories.
ARTIST STATEMENT
My dad cut meat in a grocery store in a small town in northeastern Colorado. I had trouble watching him butcher at his sister’s ranch. People in my family hunt and fish, eating the meat they get. When I saw on exhibit a parka from Alaska made from animal intestines, I was deeply moved at the idea that an inner membrane could be an outer protective garment. I wanted to experiment with a related material, giving (new) life to that which was no longer living. I began working with sausage casings, hog intestines, which have become my signature material—a translucent, inner skin, permeable, and remarkably resilient.
Place and the materials of a place inform my work. Now that I no longer have living relatives in this state, I welcome the opportunity to return and exhibit my artwork, to reflect on what Colorado has given me. When I fly into Denver, I respond to the circular irrigation patterns on the flat Plains where I was born. I’m eager to see how the white stretch fabric peaks of the Denver airport echo the snow-covered mountains nearby. My years as an undergraduate in Boulder opened the world to me, giving me a deep desire to explore, to cross boundaries. Places where I have lived and what they have given me are now within, shaping my imagination, how I see and what I try to say in my work. This exhibit represents a kind of homecoming—a part of me is Here, Still.

Artist Workshop
OPENINGS: Netting and Looping – FULL/WAITLIST
with Pat Hickman
Saturday-Sunday, September 9 & 10 | 9am-5pm
$250 members / $275 Non-Member (payment can be made in two installments)
+ est. $35 materials fee payable to DAC on first day of class
This workshop will encourage participants to explore visual ideas suggested through openwork textile structure, primarily that of knotted netting and knotless netting. Reserving space for air and the importance of what is “not there” will be built into conceptually based quick studies and studio projects, both 2-D and 3-D. There will be exploration with a variety of materials, including gut (hog casings), Hickman’s signature material, using it as both structure and skin in netting. Other materials include colored wire and waxed linen thread. The workshop is less a “how to”, more an experience in discovery, questioning, and ongoing ways of working. No previous knowledge of these textile structures is required, just a willingness to explore and learn.
