The Friends of the Art Library are pleased to present Questions of Significance a solo exhibit of artwork exploring the Grand Canyon and portraying it in a variety of media by visiting Kristen Doty.

ARTIST STATEMENT

Questions of Significance is an exhibition of artwork created to celebrate and portray the Grand Canyon. The works are the result of an artistic quest to find a medium of expression suitable to represent this awesome natural wonder. Hiking in and painting the beauty of the canyon has had a profound affect on me and led to another study that has become wildly fascinating. Questions arose about the how and why, the geology, size, and history. In an attempt to depict this amazing place, I found it helpful to learn about these things. My hope is the artwork will deepen the viewer‘s appreciation of the canyon, and encourage curiosity so they will be inspired to learn more about it. The information garnered can eventually help us ponder the big questions about our existence, our own place in time, and other questions of significance.

ARTIST BIO

Kristen Doty is an artist with a passion for drawing, painting and calligraphy. She has taken classes and workshops in the US, Canada and Europe, and continues to study art and techniques through books, magazines, classes, and by viewing art in galleries and museums. Her works have been in juried exhibitions and published in magazines, including International Artist Magazine, Drawing Magazine, and Letter Arts Review; and in books including the Strokes of Genius – The Best of Drawing book series (Vols. 2, 3, & 6), as well as prints, posters, greeting cards, logos and book titles.

She enjoys sharing her passion by teaching at conferences and workshops across the USA and abroad, including Belgium, Canada and Japan. Her teaching emphasis is to promote learning in a fun, encouraging, and relaxed atmosphere while also building a solid knowledge of techniques and developing skills students can utilize and integrate in their own work.
